In Chapter 2 of Justice And The Politics of Difference, entitled “The Five Faces of Oppression,” Iris Marion Young offers a unique perspective on what power really is in modern day society and how oppression plays a role in it.
In the article “Five Faces of Oppression”, Iris Young articulates her argument of there being five types of oppression prevalent in society that is best described as a structural concept since it is not just in the way that everyone acts, but rather it’s ingrained into the average everyday life.
According to Iris Marion Young, there are five “faces” or types of oppression: violence, exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, and cultural imperialism. Exploitation is the act of using people’s labors to produce profit while not.

This is my final term paper and I have to read The Five Faces of Oppression by Iris Young, and write a paper on it for my Philosophy class. The introduction is to include briefly the author’s point of view, objection, and a possible resolution.
However, using Young's (1990) 'face faces of oppression' model, we may be able to illuminate a little better, some of the complex social processes and general unquestioning of beliefs, opinions and assumptions, that individuals may employ on a daily basis, and within their social interactions with each other. The five faces of oppression describe how groups are treated in relation to other groups or to society, but they all stem from first defining a group. Young suggests that oppression is a condition of groups. By this, she means that defining groups labels one group as different from the other. Cultural imperialism is where these groups are defined.
Oppression is also not a unified phenomenon with an underlying, fundamental essence. To make sense of oppression, we need to revise our accounts of social ontology to recognize the existence of “groups.” Social groups can experience oppression in any of the following, crucially distinct five.
Young also offers a comprehensive understanding of oppression in its restricted appreciation since the existence of the oppressed does not necessarily imply the simultaneous existence of an oppressor. These five faces: Exploitation, Marginalization, Powerlessness, Cultural Imperialism and Violence are the main focus of the article.
